ChatGPT is OpenAI's general chat assistant. For writing, people use it to produce first drafts, restructure messy notes, rewrite a paragraph for a different reader, summarize long documents and brainstorm titles or angles. You can paste text in or upload files, and give follow-up instructions until the result fits.

It works in a browser, on desktop and in mobile apps, and OpenAI sells developer access to its models through a separate API. It writes in many languages besides English.

Two things to watch when you use it for writing. It can state facts that are wrong with complete confidence, so check names, numbers and quotes against a source. And drafts can sound generic until you give it your own material, examples of your voice and a clear brief. Treat the output as a starting point you edit, and check your organization's rules before pasting in confidential text.
