QuillBot

Paraphrasing and rewriting

About QuillBot

Paraphrasing tool with modes for tone and length, plus grammar checking, summarizing and citations.

QuillBot is best known for its paraphraser. You paste in a sentence or paragraph, pick a mode such as standard, fluent, formal or shorter, and it rewords the text while trying to keep the meaning. A slider controls how many words it changes. The same account includes a grammar checker, a summarizer and a citation generator, which is why it is popular with students.

It works on the website, through a Chrome extension, and inside Microsoft Word and Google Docs. The free version limits text length and modes; paid plans lift those limits. The paraphraser handles several languages besides English.

Rewording someone else's text does not make it yours. Schools and publishers treat paraphrased copying as plagiarism, so cite the source whenever the idea came from someone else. For your own drafts, it is a quick way to see other ways a sentence could go.
